    Food Pantry Volunteer Days


    ENGIE's Social Value Manager, Julian Sanz, has been delivering a programme of social value initiatives to support the local community in Harlow, Essex, as part of ENGIE's responsible business commitments for Clarion.

    After supporting the Community Embrace Food Pantry earlier in the month with the extensive revamp of their food pantry area, Julian returned to once again offer support and help.

    On 7th and 8th January 2021, ENGIE's Social Value Manager, Julian Sanz, and Resident Liaison Officer, Laura Bellinger, were joined by Benn, Dawn and Kaira of KM-ECO Ltd for two days to volunteer at the food pantry.

    The volunteering team spent the two days sorting out food donations, packaging up food parcels and making socially distanced deliveries to people in the local area who were unable to attend the food pantry in person due to isolating or shielding.

    The work the food pantry is doing will support more than 150 local people and families.

    Community Food Pantry Installation


    Delivering a programme of social value initiative as part of our contract with Clarion, ENGIE's Social Value Manager, Julian Sanz, was delighted to be able to offer his team's support to help local residents, Herty, set up the new location for her food pantry which supports some of the area's most vulnerable families in Harlow, Essex.

    On 4th January 2021, Julian joined Herty at the Great Parndon Community Centre in Harlow where an old storeroom has been granted to house the food pantry. The space was perfect but in need of a revamp to make it fit for purpose, so they spent five days and more than £4000 on materials and labour to bring it up to scratch.

    As part of the revamp, ENGIE installed a new ceiling and flooring, locks for the doors, carried out electrical upgrades and installed new lighting. A complete redecoration of the area and putting up notice boards, signage and shelving for the food completed the impressive transformation!

    The new improvements better equip the food pantry to support more than 200 local families. Moving forward, ENGIE will provide further support by designing a new logo and branding for the pantry and will be printing leaflets and installing new signage in February.

  • Social Value Event: Care Leavers Festive Donations

    Care Leavers Festive Donations


    ENGIE is committed to supporting care leavers to have the opportunities they need to move to adulthood successfully and we are a registered signatory member of the Care Leavers' Covenant, part of the Government's 'Keep on Caring' strategy to support people leaving care to become independent.

    The Covenant is a promise made by private, public or voluntary organisations to provide support for care leavers aged 16-25 to help them live independently.

    To further deliver on our ongoing commitments for care leavers, ENGIE is working in partnership with our client, Clarion and Break Charity to support the great work the are doing with Norfolk County Council.

    In December 2020, ENGIE's Social Value Manager, Julian Sanz, and Clarion's Neighbourhood Investment Manager, Yvonne Ogden, each donated £500 to Break Charity. The £1,000 donation helped Break Charity to be able to provide gifts for young care leavers who were preparing to spend their first Christmas in their new homes; making the festive period that little bit more special.

  • Coronavirus Processes and Update

    What residents should expect from ENGIE

    • Notification before any visits take place
    • All ENGIE site team and operatives will have, and be wearing, the correct PPE (gloves, masks, etc)
    • Overshoes will be put on when entering the home and taken off when leaving
    • Any member of the site team and operatives displaying symptoms relating to coronavirus will not be working on site until they have self-isolated as per government guidelines
    • ENGIE has adapted their work practices and procedures to ensure that all works can be carried out safely to protect the residents, site team and operatives
    • ENGIE will ensure that the number of visits to your home is kept to an absolute minimum
    • Number of operatives carrying out works internally will be kept to a minimum and where the works allow (e.g. electrics, window installation, door installation), the same operatives will complete the works from start to finish
    • Works will only take place in one room at a time (where possible) to allow for the social distancing to be maintained
    • RLOs will also act as coronavirus monitors, ensuring that as per government guidelines, social distancing is being adhered to and correct PPE is always being worn
    • RLOs will be the point of contact if a resident needs to leave their home whilst works are being carried out in the communal areas. They will ensure that the resident can leave and return in a safe manner
    • The times of work starting in the morning and nishing in the afternoon will be adapted where possible to allow for the busy times of people leaving and returning
    • Posters will be placed around the working areas, reminding everyone of the ‘dos and don’ts’ around the safety of the works and coronavirus
    • Breaks will be staggered so that everyone is not in the same area at the same time
    • The RLOs will be more visible around site
    • All areas will be cleaned on a regular basis and there will be a welfare operative ensuring the site compound is constantly cleaned and there is enough hand sanitiser for the number of people on site
    • Regular communication will be put up in communal areas around when works will be happening and where possible, the use of email or text will be used instead of letters to communicate with the residents, reducing the risk of unnecessary contact
    • All measures have been put in place to keep everyone safe, but as importantly, reassurance that if you are feeling ill, you will not be penalised and the works will be done when you are better and it is safe to do the works
    • Social distancing and safe working will be adhered to, especially when the operatives are arriving and leaving site
    • We will make sure that nobody is placed in unnecessary risk


    What ENGIE expects from residents

    Please answer the following questions truthfully:

    1. Have you or anyone living in your home been abroad in the last four weeks?
    2. Which country / countries have you visited?
    3. Have you or anyone in your home decided to self-isolate?
    4. Are you or anyone in your home suffering from flu like symptoms, or confirmed as having coronavirus?
    5. Are you considered a vulnerable person or extremely clinically vulnerable according to the Public Health England guidelines? (Heart or blood issues, diabetic, cancer patients etc)
    6. Are you willing for the ENGIE site team and operatives to come into your home to carry out the survey / works?
    • Once the works have started, notification to be given if residents or any others in the household have or are displaying symptoms of coronavirus
    • Always maintain social distancing, either by standing two metres away, or stay in a room where works are not taking place. Ideally in a separate room with the door shut for the duration of the works • Try to limit the amount of times you leave and return home
    • Contact the RLO if you do need to leave your home so they can ensure it is safe to do so and when you need to return
    • Do not visit the Site Office, please contact the RLO and they will come to you
    • Please do not be offended that the ENGIE site team and operatives are wearing masks, gloves and overshoes in your home

    Our client, Clarion Housing, has recently opened a new venue at the Community Hub in Maidstone to provide a drop-in facility for tenants.

    As part of our Social Value Plan for Clarion, ENGIE’s Community Impact Manager, Alan Beech, has been working closely with Clarion’s Employment and Training Officer, Julie Berry and offered to provide a programme of free training courses for tenants accessing the centre, delivered via ENGIE’s Learning and Development Centre of Excellence.

    The first course delivered under the programme was Emergency First Aid at Work.

    Overview

    On 13th June 2019, ENGIE’s Trainer, Fay Brown, attended the Community Hub to deliver Emergency First Aid at Work training to people who were keen to boost their CVs and skills base.

    Learning how to perform CPR

    The accredited course provides information and practical advice on basic life-saving first aid and workplace health and safety regulations. Participants were able to learn about the role of the first aider, managing an emergency, communication and casualty care, bleeding (minor and severe), burns, choking (adult), fainting, health and safety (first aid) regulations, resuscitation (adult CPR), seizures (adult), shock, and how to respond to an unresponsive casualty, including putting someone into the recovery position.

    Fay provided practical demonstrations and attendees took the opportunity to practise the techniques themselves, giving them the skills and confidence to respond to a range of accidents and first aid emergencies they could encounter in the workplace.

    Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidelines indicate that it’s good practice for anyone who works in low hazard environments to hold a certificate in Emergency First Aid at Work. With First Aid being such vital practice within organisations, ENGIE recognises that by providing these courses, we’re able to support the employment potential of local people and having this training will support unemployed people when applying for work.

    The training was a success, with every participant fully engaging, asking questions and commenting on how useful the course had been. Those who attended the course passed the test at the end with flying colours.

    This training will be followed with further sessions of EFAW along with Manual Handling, Fire Marshal & Banksman courses all planned throughout the year.

    ENGIE is working with Clarion Housing to deliver their annual programme of planned maintenance, including kitchen and bathroom refurbishments, heating upgrades, external wall insulation and a variety of other external works.

    As part of our social value plan for Clarion, ENGIE’s Community Impact Team delivers a range of initiatives and activities for local people and organisations.

    A major focus of our social value work is to strengthen communities by offering opportunities for employment and training.

    Our bespoke Employment Skills Plan for Clarion Housing sets out an ambitious aim to engage and support more than 400 residents through work placements, job training and apprenticeships in 2019 and ENGIE is working in partnership with Clarion Futures, the charitable trust at the heart of Clarion, to deliver this.

    All training courses are accredited and industry recognised and delivered through ENGIE’s in house Learning and Development Centre of Excellence.

    Overview

    On 6th June 2019, ENGIE delivered free Level One Health and Safety Awareness training for 14 Clarion residents in Basildon.

    The course was delivered by ENGIE’s Trainer, Tony Bates, and is part of a wider Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) employment and training course being offered to residents in partnership with Clarion Futures. ENGIE is an approved CITB training provider; developing skills within the construction sector and helping to build a safe, professional and fully qualified workforce.

    The Level One Health and Safety Awareness Course covers a range of topics including typical site hazards and how to control them, fire prevention, occupational health, protective wear and equipment, manual handling, working at height, individual responsibilities, practical standards for site safety and legal requirements and liabilities.

    This training is an essential step towards gaining a CSCS card which provides proof of an individual having the training and qualifications necessary for the type of work they carry out on construction sites
    and is mandatory for anyone wishing to gain employment in the construction sector.

    The wider programme of training and support as part of this course will see residents take part in:
    • Level 1 Health and Safety Awareness
    • CSCS revision and test
    • One-week work placement
    • Guaranteed interviews for jobs

    As part of our social value plan for Clarion, ENGIE’s Community Impact Team delivers a range of initiatives and activities to improve outcomes for local people and organisations.

    Our dedicated Community Impact Manager, Julian Sanz, has been working in partnership with Clarion Futures – the charitable trust at the heart of Clarion – to deliver programmes as part of our community work in Norfolk.

    In spring, we were asked to help out with creating a small community garden in Reedham, Norfolk, and were happy to offer our support with this visionary project.

    Overview

    The new garden space was the dream of local Clarion resident, Steve Smith, who had seen the small space of disused land go unutilised and had a vision to see it become a community space for all ages.

    On 5th June 2019, ENGIE’s Community Impact Team members, Julian and Richard Sanz, were joined by ENGIE’s Resident Liaison Officer, Sarah Lightfoot, and Clarion staff, Rob Duig and Melanie McAdam, to help Steve’s dream come true.

    ENGIE supplied more than £2500 worth of materials and volunteer time, including one tonne of top soil, eight garden sleepers, weed matting, more than 2000 screws, and the seating so that people could stop to rest and relax in the new garden.

    The newly revamped community garden now includes two new benches, two mushroom seats and two raised planters and will be used by more than 40 local residents and school children.

    A very big thank you to ENGIE and Clarion Futures for helping us make this garden a reality. It’s far better than we could have imagined and has already generated so much positive feedback from local residents.

    As part of our social value plan for Clarion, ENGIE’s Community Impact Team delivers a range of initiatives and activities for local people and support organisations.

    One such organisation is Shenwood Court, a homeless hostel in Borehamwood for families and individuals awaiting permanent accommodation from the Council. Alongside accommodation, Shenwood
    Court provides support for residents, including the high number of families with young children living at the scheme.

    Having originally become involved with the scheme in 2018 when we refurbished their community garden, ENGIE’s Community Impact Manager, Julian Sanz, has maintained contact to offer ENGIE’s support
    where possible.

    Overview

    In Spring 2019, Shenwood Court installed free Wi-Fi at the centre, giving free internet access to its residents.

    The negative impacts of digital exclusion and a lack of digital skills are widely recognised, being linked to poorer health outcomes, increased social isolation, lowered access to jobs and education and an increased risk of falling into poverty.

    By providing free Wi-Fi, residents have easier access to information and support.

    On 29th May 2019, ENGIE supported the launch of the new ShenwoodCourt Wi-Fi system. A garden party was held with ENGIE sponsoring pizzas and a face painter for the event.

    ENGIE’s site team, including Resident Liaison Officer (RLO), Claire Creed, Site Manager, Sean Mulholland, Senior RLO, Katy Creed and Marketing Coordinator, Lewis Worsley, also attended with Julian to help run the day which was attended by more than 25 people.

    Megan Fitt, Digital Inclusion Officer, Clarion, commented:

    A great event to celebrate the installation of Wi-Fi at the scheme. New friends were made and ideas for the future taken away. A massive thank you to ENGIE for their support. The pizza and face painting were definitely a winner!
